How GuideStar Creates Results

Each organization faced different challenges, but both used GuideStar’s framework to
strengthen leadership, improve culture, and create better performance outcomes.

PUBLIC SECTOR / MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT

Municipal
Government
Transformation

THE SITUATION

A municipality in a major suburban market wanted to be seen as business-friendly and to operate more like a business. Instead, business constituents viewed departments as gatekeepers more focused on maintaining the status quo than on partnering to create or expedite solutions, especially in areas such as permits and inspections.

THE Action

Working with GuideStar, the municipality’s senior and operational leaders learned and applied the principles and practices of Character-Based Capitalism. The work focused on strategic leadership alignment, cross-functional team development, and a stronger foundation in shared vision and values.

Company Transformation

THE SITUATION

Leaders of a small, family-owned international
importing company were committed to
building a great company, but they faced
several significant challenges. The founder
and CEO was retiring after 27 years, the
organization operated in silos, the structure
no longer matched how work needed to be
done, and leadership roles were not clearly
defined to serve the company’s diverse
customer segments.

THE ACTION

Through the Character-Based Capitalism program, strategic, operational, and grassroots leaders aligned around a new set of values and refined vision and mission statements. They redesigned the organization into a matrix structure that blended subject-matter expertise with cross-functional teams, improving flexibility and workflows for customers and suppliers. To help offset the projected loss of the founder’s knowledge, the company also created an internal “university” to build business knowledge for leaders at all levels.

RESULT

Employees became more motivated and united around the company’s purpose, with joy emerging as a defining attribute of the culture. Communication and collaboration improved significantly. Service quality rose to the level required to become a distributor for a major international company. These changes increased company revenue by 25% and positioned the business for continued growth.
